Three Tips for While You Wait

1 Jun
2009

Waiting for a new toy to arrive in the mail is an awful experience. If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly praying for time to move faster, and obsessing over any updates that you can get at via postal tracking numbers.

Instead, why not use the time to get your ducks in a row and prepare for the much anticipated day of arrival?

Here’s a few things you can do while you wait for your Magic (or Dream, or… whatever) to land on your doorstep:

Read some application reviews, and take a look through the Market. Try to decide in advance which ones are worth your time (and possibly money) before the phone arrives. That way you can charge it up, and start downloading your chosen bits of software as soon as possible You can browse the standard Android Market here, at Cyrket. There’s also another App Store at this location.

If you’re planning to watch media on your phone, there’s a good chance you’ll need to convert your video files to a suitable format. Why not do that in advance, so you can just slap those videos straight on there? Handbrake is a great (free!) cross-platform media converter, set it to the iPod Touch/iPhone mode, and tinker with the settings until you get a level of quality you like.

One unfortunate downside to the HTC Android phones for sale at the moment is that they lack a 3.5mm headphone jack. While this is a sad oversight on HTC’s count, it’s something you can fix by spending a few extra dollars. If your new toy doesn’t come with an adapter that allows you to plug your headphones of choice in, grab one in advance from your favourite retailer. They’re exceptionally cheap on eBay, and some have built in microphones as well, allowing you to use your personal headphones as a hands-free kit. While you’re at it, why not snag any other accessories you know you’re going to want or need?

Just make sure you’re prepared for the glorious arrival, that way you can spend as little time being confused as possible, and far more time enjoying your new toy.
